Suspended MPs resume duty

Following a motion moved by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges and Ethics Paramount Chief Alie Badara Sheriff III to pardon three suspended MPs, the Speaker of Parliament Chernor Abass Bundu on the 28th February 2023 ordered that the men return to their allotted seats in the House.

APC condemns attacks on party officials

The main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Party has expressed dismay and anguish over violent attacks on their party officials and supporters by ‘state apparatus’ on the 22nd February 2023 during the return of their Flag bearer, Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara and other elected members to Freetown from their Delegates  Conference in Makeni.

The party stated that they were given full permission and cover by the Sierra Leone Police to go ahead with their activities.

EU denies partisan allegations

The European Union has in a press statement denied the allegations by the Leader of the Coalition for Change (C4C) in Parliament Saa Emerson Lamina against the EU Ambassador Manuel Muller, referring to him as the “mouthpiece” of the main opposition party the All People’s Congress (APC).

Two men killed over a woman in northern Sierra Leone

Police in Mile 91 in the Tonkolili district are investigating the deaths of two men in a twisted case of intense jealousy and vengeful mob justice. Manna Kallon and Sorie Ibrahim Koroma both of Mathoir village along the Masiaka-Mile 91 Highway died following an acrimonious love triangle in which 27 year-old Fatmata Kamara was also a key figure.

The two men according to police report, were both commercial motorbike riders who were at some point in time  in a love relationship with Fatmata a mother of one.

Call for more female police officers in Sierra Leone

In an effort to minimize challenges and abuses faced by women in Police detention, Advocaid –an advocacy group has called for an increase in the number of females recruited into the Sierra Leone Police.

The group referenced a case of a woman called Baindu (not her name) who was arrested in late 2022 and detained in Pujehun Police Station, Southern Sierra Leone during which she was allegedly raped by a policeman who was on night shift.

US MCC’s Chief assures commitment to energy sector

New radio to promote women

In a bid to create more platforms for women to have a say and participate in national issues, a new radio station named Rise radio 96.3 FM was yesterday, 28th February launched in Freetown.  

Speaking during a brief ceremony to mark the opening of the station, its manager Mariama Bah said that the institution is owned and managed by a woman and that two-thirds of their staff are young women with the potential to grow in the media.
