CSO, NRA engage traders on GST machine use

A Civil Society Consortium on Community Accountability and Service delivery in collaboration with National Revenue Authority (NRA) has engaged traders on the use of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) machines.

In his statement during the engagement on the 8th July, 2024 in Kenema, the Director of the consortium, Williams Sao Lamin said civil society has the responsibility to remind the government of the promises they made to citizens in terms of development and service delivery during the campaign period.

Calls for speedy amendment of Sierra Leone’s disability law

Amnesty International has together with persons with disabilities called on the government of Sierra Leone to speedily enact the amended disability bill by the end of this year, 2024. A bill which they say could address most of their welfare issues among others.  

They also called for a wide range of consultation with persons with disability during the review process of the bill in order to capture issues affecting their well-being.

Suspected mass food poisoning cases still unresolved

One month after 80 people were treated in hospital after eating from a local restaurant in a Freetown slum called Mabella; there is still no clarity about whether it was a case of food poisoning as widely alleged on social media.

The Lab Manager at National Public Health Agency, Doris Harding told Politico last Friday that they have sent the samples abroad for further testing. She refused to be drawn on their initial findings saying she awaits the test results from abroad.

I was never part of the coup – Sgt. Bundu

State prosecutors have cross-examined the 2nd accused in the ongoing court martial Sergeant Ibrahim Bundu Kamara who elected to defend himself from the witness box.

He told the court he was never part of the coup plotters. He said the assailants captured him. The accused was responding to a statement by state prosecutor Joseph A.K. Sesay who accused him of voluntarily going to the scene where weapons were being looted from the armoury at Wilberforce Barracks.

Sierra Leone targets long-term energy solution

High ranking government officials last week addressed government’s new approach to providing energy to the people of Sierra Leone. The Minister of Finance and the Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security, both spoke at the weekly government press briefing on Tuesday 2nd July this year.
