New World Bank Country Director presented to Sierra Leone's president

Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio has assured a closer working relation with the new World Bank Country Director.

Mr Pierre Frank Laporte, Country for Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana, is in the country on his first visit since his appointment to the position based in Accra, Ghana.

He was at State House on Monday where he was presented officially to the president.

Sierra Leone President meets Indian envoy

Sierra Leone and India hope to strengthen bilateral ties following a meeting by President Julius Maada Bio and an Indian envoy.

The envoy, who is the High Commissioner of India to Sierra Leone, Birender Singh Yadav, met with Bio on Monday at State House. A statement issued by the Presidential press secretary said the two discussed possible means of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The statement quoted Mr Yadav saying he was thankful for the opportunity to meet with the President.

Sierra Leone's environment agency insists its processes are transparent

The Deputy Director of Policy Planning and Research at Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Sheikh Ahmed Tunis has told Politico that they are committed to transparency in all their programs. He made the comment in reaction to complaints by the Sierra Leone Chamber of Agri-business Development (SLeCAD) over EPA’s alleged lack of transparency and accountability in its taxing matrix.

Beware! Expired drinks in circulation in Sierra Leone

At least two brands of beverages are currently in circulation in the market despite having expired for over two months, Politico has learnt following weeks of an investigation.

“Sting”, an energy drink and “5,0 Original” which is an alcoholic drink are being sold in the open to a largely unsuspecting public.

But it may well be that consumers are also drawn to the products by their cost.

Sierra Leone’s environmental agency at loggerheads with agribusinesses

The Sierra Leone Chamber of Agri-business Development (SLaDEC) has given a 21 day ultimatum to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to review the taxing formula they use to tax Agro-businesses in Sierra Leone.

SLaDEC, which represents private interests in the Agro-business industry made the call following the closure of Bennimix’s food processing plant in Bo last week. Bennimix is a local company that produces baby formula made mainly with ‘Benni’ (Sesame seeds).
