Six new Commissioners of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have taken up office in Abuja, Nigeria. They include Khady Ramatu Sacco of Sierra Leone who becomes the Commissioner of Administration and Finance. Mrs Sacco is the former Director of Finance and Budget at the Bank of Sierra Leone.
The new commissioners emerged following a recruitment exercise which has now been validated by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers at an extraordinary meeting, according to an ECOWAS press release.
The other five are Salamatu Suleiman of Nigeria who becomes Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace and Security; Ebrima Njie of The Gambia (Commissioner of Infrastructure), Dr. Lapodini Marc Atouga of Togo (Commissioner of Agriculture, Environment and Water Resources),
Hamid Ahmed of Niger (Commissioner of Trade, Customs, Industry, Mines and Free Movement) and Amb. Ibrahim Ba of Mali who is the new Commissioner of Macroeconomic Policy.
Meanwhile ECOWAS now has a new Vice President, Dr. Toga Mckintosh. Until his appointment, Dr Mckintosh was Liberia's foreign minister and he replaces Jean de Dieu Somda.
The ECOWAS Commission is run by a management team which is made up of the President, Vice President and seven commissioners. It follows its transformation in 2007 from an Executive Secretariat to a Commission. In addition to the new six commissioners, the seventh one, Dr. Adrienne Diop will leave office in June.
