Sierra Leone to legislate on exam malpractice

The Sierra Leone government is working on a legislation that specifically deals with examination malpractice, amidst growing concern over the spate of the menace.

Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Alpha Timbo said there is a growing culture of examination malpractice in schools that they are determined to tackle it. He made the revelation at the National Primary School Examination Data Conference hosted by the Freetown City Council last week.

 Data shows 6,000 of Sierra Leone's NPSE candidates couldn’t shade properly

A research by the Freetown City Council (FCC) has revealed that 6,000 pupils who took the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) this year shaded answers wrongly during the examination.

The research, done in partnership with the Association of Independent Schools (ARS), is part of efforts by the Council to better organize itself in delivering in its mandate in the education sector.

Chief Innovation Officer calls for reshaping of Sierra Leone university curriculum

Sierra Leone must reshape its university curriculum if it is to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the country’s Chief Innovation officer has said.

Dr David Moinina Sengeh, who is also the Director of the Science, Technology and Innovation in the office of the President, made the call last week during a presentation to cabinet at State House.

Services School gets major infrastructure boost

The Services Secondary School has completed a major infrastructural project at their school grounds in Juba, Freetown. The construction work involved the extension of the stage area and the erection of a brand new 500-seater pavilion for the school.

Plan International commits to support ‘Hands Off Our Girls’ campaign in Sierra Leone

The international girl rights campaign NGO, Plan International has committed to supporting the ‘Hands off Our Girls’ campaign. The Country Director of Plan Int’l, Evariste Sindayigaya, said they will support the program because it is in line with their own program - Girls Get Equal.

Sindayigaya made the commitment on Friday whiles donating office equipment to the Fatima and Maada Bio Foundation. The foundation is the ‘implementing wing’ of the Office of the First Lady, Fatima Jabbie Bio.

NATCOM survey to improve on connectivity

The National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) says it plans to embark on a survey designed to help operators improve on their connectivity.

The Access Gap Survey, to be conducted in collaboration with the Universal Access Development Fund (UADF), is a remedial measure aimed at addressing the problems of mobile and internet penetration in the country, an official of NATCOM said.

Sierra Leone cabinet approves repeal of criminal defamation

Cabinet in Sierra Leone has agreed a repeal of the hated Criminal and Seditious Libel Law which has been in the country’s law books since 1965, according to Minister of Information and Communication, Mohamed Rahman Swaray.

Addressing journalists, he said the repeal of the 54-year-old law now rested with parliamentarians who will handle it when they resume later this month.
