Suspected bomb kills one in eastern Sierra Leone

An explosion in the Eastern District of Kono has claimed the life a baby and left her mother hospitalized.

The mother, Mariama Turay, is being treated for injuries she sustained on her legs and face. One of her toes was cut off in the explosion that occured while she was cooking over the weekend.

The police said the incident which happened at Damper Lane, Kapeteh in Koidu Town was reported on Saturday, September 7. But they couldn't say for sure if it's a bomb at this point.

Sierra Leone to launch 5-year health plan

The Sierra Leone government will today launch a landmark five-year action plan to tackle health emergencies amidst a growing threat of disease epidemics.

The National Action Plan for Health Security (NAPHS) is a blue print of how Sierra Leone will respond to such emergencies and it entails what the country needs in terms of both human and material resources.

President Julius Maada Bio is scheduled to formally launch the document at an event at the Bintumani Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown.

Sierra Leone former ministers face off at inquiry

The former Minister and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs (MSWGCA) faced each other on Wednesday at the ongoing Commissions of Inquiry.

Dr Sylvia Blyden who was the minister at MSWGCA in the last administration of President Ernest Bai Kroroma, is a person of interest at the commission for allegedly perpetrating violence against children. Her deputy at the time, Rugiatu Neneh Turay is a witness against her in the case the State is building.

Police say “NO” to Sierra Leone protest

The Sierra Leone Police has warned against any planned protest within the capital without permission from them. The warning comes in the wake of a social media message which has gone viral, trying to rally people to turn out and demonstrate against the current government of President Julius Maada Bio.

Police made the warning during a press conference at their Headquarters in Freetown.

The group that is organizing the protest is known as Concerned Citizens.  

CSOs present recommendations for ongoing review of Mines Act

Civil Society Organizations working in the natural resources governance sector and economic justice have presented their input into ongoing review of the 2009 Mines and Minerals Act.

The organisations, through an umbrella body called NaRGEJ (Natural Resources Governance and Economic Justice), presented their input as a set of recommendations to the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources on Tuesday, September 10.
