Radio managers angry with Sierra Leone's telecoms Commission

Community Radio Station managers and media rights campaigners have condemned a move by the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) to review the status of community radios operating in cities.

NATCOM intends to convert all community radio stations operating in cities to commercial radio stations. This means that they will have to pay more than they currently pay to the regulator.

NATCOM said the move was necessary given changes in demographics in cities over the years.

Sierra Leone Parliament resumes today

The House of Parliament is set to resume sittings today following the end of its annual recess.

The recess allowed the Members of Parliament (MP) to visit their constituencies and engage their constituents. All 132 MPs are expected to be in Parliament on Thursday morning.

Sierra Leone State Chief Protocol under ACC probe

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has said it has initiated a probe on the assets of the State Chief Protocol, Fatmata Edna Kargbo, following her controversial testimony in a Nigerian church earlier this month.

Kargbo is being investigated for unexplained wealth and abuse of office, an ACC spokesman told Politico.

Road Maintenance Fund says need to review Act is ‘urgent’

The Road Maintenance Fund Administration (RMFA) has said the need to review its act is urgent considering the strain the go through in accessing resources for their activity. Officials of the institution said they cannot deal with the emerging problems faced in the road sector because the Act that established the institution is “obsolete”.

The RMFA was established by an Act of Parliament in 2010 for an efficient, economic and sustainable management and administration of funds allocated the routine maintenance roads.

Sierra Leone Police say they “were overwhelmed” in cancelled by-election

The Sierra Leone Police have said that they were overwhelmed by the number of ‘thugs’ that attacked the polling center located at Sierra Model School in Constituency 110, Western Rural district, hence their inability to protect the electoral materials.

The Police made the admission at a press conference on Tuesday at their headquarters in Freetown.

SLRSA resumes work in Lunsar amidst security fears

The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority offices in Lunsar has resumed work on Wednesday following a break-in on Monday. The incident left a security officer injured and properties worth millions of Leones carted away.

The head of the Lunsar office, Badara Tarawallie told Politico that they have resumed work amidst fear and suspicion.
