Sierra Leone health ministry and partners commemorate breastfeeding week

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) and its partners, including UNICEF, Action Against Huger, World Vision and Focus 1000 have called on the media to join in the efforts to building a stronger and healthier generation of children through effective breast feeding. The call was mad as part of the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), which runs from August 1 to 7.

This year’s theme for the WHO designated day is: ‘Empowering Parents: Enable Breastfeeding’.

Five years since his death, Sierra Leone still abandons Ebola doctor’s children, survivors

Five years on Mnday since the death of Dr Shek Umar Khan, the man who headed Sierra Leone’s initial response to the 2014-2016 Ebola Outbreak, the state has still not taken over the responsibilities of his two children.

Speaking to Politico, Dr Khan’s brother C-ray Khan, said the now 24-year-old daughter and the 17-year-old son were being looked after by their uncles and aunts.

There were violent clashes on Monday night at Hamilton, on the Freetown peninsula between supporters of the ruling SLPP party and the main opposition APC party ahead of the 24 August parliamentary bye-election.

It was the day for the APC to hold their rally ahead of the parliamentary bye-election for Constituency 110 in the Western Area rural district.

But according to the party’s Deputy Organising Secretary, Karamoh Kabba, they came under attack allegedly by supporters of the ruling SLPP who he said pelted them with stones around 7 PM, dispersing their rally.

128 university students at IPAM may be rusticated in Sierra Leone

The Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) is set to decide the fate of 128 students who were allegedly involved in examination malpractice. According to the Head of the Disciplinary Committee at the college, Dr Ezekiel Duramani Lakkoh, investigations will be concluded later this week.

Denying your partner sex could land you in jail

Married people (men and women) who deny their partners sex, can be jailed for up to two years for causing “emotional abuse”, the police in Ghana have warned, citing an existing law in force since 2007.

The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police also imposes an optional fine of 500 penalty units, which is equivalent to GH¢6,000 (Le10million). It also provides that people found guilty of the offence can face both fines and jail term.

Orange launches three projects in fulfillment of FQE pledge

The telecommunication giant Orange SL has launched three educational projects as part of efforts to fulfill a pledge made towards the government’s Free Quality Education (FQE) program.

The projects include the introduction of coding in schools, supply of free hygiene pads to female pupils and sponsorship of inter-secondary school coding competition.

ESHIA study paves way for oil and gas survey in Sierra Leone
