Former deputy minister convicted

The high Court of Sierra Leone presided over by Justice Reginald Fynn has convicted the former Minister of Works, Housing and Infrastructure on one count of failing to disclose interest to a public body.

Abdul Barrie was ordered to pay a fine of Le250million within 30 days effective 24 April or face a three-year imprisonment to be spent at the maximum security Pademba Road Prison in Freetown.

Prisoner drowns in Pujehun

The management of the Pujehun Correctional Centre in southern Sierra Leone has confirmed the death by drowning of an inmate in the River Wanjei.

Mustapha Kpakawa reportedly drowned on April 22 and his body was discovered the following day with the help of some community herbalists. But while the prison authorities say he was trying to escape from detention, the general view on the ground is that he died while fetching water for the prison service.

Inmate tortured to death in Bo prison

The death of an inmate in the hands of his cellmates in Bo has raised questions about prison conditions in Sierra Leone.

Twenty-two year old Juana Brima died on April 4 from injuries he sustained from torture meted out on him a day earlier.

The management of the Bo Correctional Center confirmed the incident which occurred at the Male wing of the Centre which is located in Kortigbuma Section in Bo Town.

Sierra Leone's newly expanded container terminal to boost economy

The dream of the Freetown Port becoming the largest transshipment hub in Sub-Saharan Africa is getting closer to reality with the recent inauguration of its newly expanded container terminal.

The project funded by the renowned French port handler, Bollore Transport and Logistics, which manages the terminal, is expected to cut down on the time of clearing containers and increase output and thereby boosting the country’s economy.
