Catholic Church curtails collections in Sierra Leone capital

The Catholic Archbishop of Freetown says it is unacceptable to engage in post-communion fund-raising activities “that go on for an unduly long time than is prescribed by the liturgical norms.”

In a letter to Priests in charge of Catholic Communities and Chaplains, Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles has urged them to stop fundraising activities like “pin a friend, person of the year competitions accompanied by collections and unveiling with collection”, describing them as an “abuse of the mass”.

Sierra Rutile defends expansion drive in Sierra Leone

The Titanium miner Sierra Rutile has defended the planned expansion of its operations in Sierra Leone in the face of opposition by rights campaigners over its social and environmental implications.

Sierra Rutile is seeking a partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to embark on the expansion in two separate operational areas in Bonthe and Moyamba, the two districts where it operates in the country.

 Kenema: Nomo Chiefdom gets health​

Residents of Normo Chiefdom in the eastern Kenema district earlier this month celebrated the inauguration of the first ever health center in their chiefdom.

The thirty-bed capacity mini hospital is located in Faama, one of about seven communities in the chiefdom. The facility was constructed with funding from the Norwegian humanitarian group Harald Splass Diacon.

Integrated Measles Rubella vaccine campaign set to commence

Ahead of the introduction of a Rubella vaccine in its national routine immunization program, Sierra Leone is due to commence a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and increase the chance of acceptance by the public.

The Rubella vaccine will be introduced in an integrated form with measles vaccines.

The Measles-Rubella Vaccine is a two in one vaccine used to vaccinate children from 0 to under 15 years against Measles and Rubella diseases. The two child diseases share similar features.

NPSE candidates in gruesome road accident en route to writing exams

It has just emerged that 15 children – 12 boys and 3 girls – have been involved in a gruesome road accident in Sierra Leone’s eastern Kono District while travelling to a neighbouring community to write this year’s National Primary School Examination (NPSE).

The incident, which happened on Friday, led to the amputation of the leg of a teacher who was accompanying the pupils. Several of the pupils sustained injuries.

Sierra Leone’s former president expresses concern over his safety

Sierra Leone’s former president, Ernest Bai Koroma has rejected the “abrupt transfer and replacement” of his state security details. This affects personnel stationed at his residence in Freetown, his home town of Makeni and his wife’s home town in Kono, according to his spokesman.
