GUINEA IS NO LONGER A SAFE HAVEN BUT…

Last week the government announced the arrest in Guinea of FIVE soldiers they describe as fugitives. Apparently, they are wanted for attempting to subvert the state. That’s a very serious accusation and it possibly explains why they took to their heels to hide away in neighboring Guinea. Our information ministry says we should expect them back home soon to explain their actions, possibly before a judge. We will wait for that.

ACC AND THE CASE OF PARAN TARAWALLY

Let’s start by saying that we have nothing against the suspended Clerk of Parliament Paran Umar Tarawally. As a news organ, we have never had to deal with him directly but we have consistently covered parliament in the interest of our numerous readers. We have to say this before heading in the direction we want to go because we are living in a country where people refuse to engage with facts. They quickly hide behind talk of jealousy or hatred and all that.

LUMLEY PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL IS REAL GAME CHANGER

The people of the western part of Freetown received an early Christmas present the other day when Principal formally opened the Lumley Pediatric hospital. The Japanese government paid for the building and all the state-of-the-art equipment in the building. It’s a fantastic place.

POLITICAL INFIGHTING MAY DESTROY SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAM

It emerged in the last 48 hours or so that trouble is brewing in one of the most important agencies of government under the Ministry of Basic Education. We are talking about the office that handles the SCHOOL FEEDING program. From what we’ve read, backed by our own investigations, we have reason to believe that unless the government acts quickly and in an unambiguous way, the education of tens of thousands of our children would be on the line.

GRAFTON POLICE STATION HAS A VERY BIG PROBLEM

As part of what we do we always visit courts and police stations and we are normally not surprised by what we normally witness but what when we visited Grafton Police station the other, we couldn’t believe the state of things there. The truth is that police stations are not leisure resorts but what obtains at Grafton Police station is a case for the IG and his senior management team and indeed the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone.

ARMED ROBBERS GETTING INCREASINGLY BOLD

We want the SLP to know that we are following closely how they are handling the recent armed robbery in Kenema in which somebody was killed. There is always this tendency for them to tell people that they were busy investigating a case and for that investigation to roll on and on with no result and for all of us to either forget or give up. To be fair, no police force solves all crimes but the rate at which cases of this nature go cold in Sierra Leone, is becoming alarming and that’s UNACCEPTABLE.
