Station Manager of Radio Wanjei in Pujehun district, Melvin Rogers was on Sunday elected Regional Secretary of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party by delegates at the party’s southern region convention in Pujehun.
The former Vice Chairman, South, of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists polled eight votes defeating Abdulai Sillah and Ibrahim Janjua who polled five and three votes respectively.
In an interview with Politico, Rogers described his victory as the result of “patience and courage”. He said he remained loyal to the SLPP even after losing out on two occasions to become the party's parliamentary candidate in Constituency 91 and as Pujehun District Chairman.
Rogers said that he faced “a huge task because the southern region is the base of the party and to run a secretariat in a region like that is not an easy task”.
He said he wanted to “restore full operations to the regional secretariat as soon as possible by encouraging party members to work as volunteers in the finance and administrative departments of the secretariat” adding that he needed office equipment and other supplies.
He congratulated his opponents for “taking part in a good contest” and called on them to “work with him in the best interest of the SLPP”.
