The national male and female champions of the just concluded Airtel U-17 tournament, Edmond Michael and Mamoud FC grabbed most of the awards in the 2nd edition of the Airtel award ceremony held at the Miata Conference hall on Friday.
Captain of Mamoud FC, Doris Ansumana grabbed the best player and the golden boot award while the Edmond Michael striker, Mohamed Haka who registered ten goals in the tournament was named the best player and golden boot award winner.
The best goal keeper prize was awarded to Isatu Dumbuya of Rising Queens while Mohamed Koroma of Edmond Michael clinched the prestigious award in the male category.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, the General Manager of Airtel, RVS Bhullar said this year`s tournament introduced is the first –ever inter- country tournament, selecting teams from all Airtel Operational areas to be held in Nairobi, Kenya later this month. He said Mamoud FC and Edmond Michael who emerged as champions will be on their way to Kenya on Friday to represent Sierra Leone in the Pan- African U-17 tournament courtesy of Airtel.
He said Airtel has demonstrated its commitment to the people of Sierra Leone by investing over $350, 000 USD in a bid to discover untapped talent in this country which no other corporate body has done.
According to him the initiative will make Airtel the most loved brand in the lives of African people by 2015. He said “Last year it was at this very podium we announced that the four young talents that left the shores of Sierra Leone for Tanzania were to train in a Manchester United clinic…today those four have done us proud and are engaged in various football activities across the country. “He stated.
Minister of Youth, Employment and Sports, Paul Kamara said Airtel has surpassed their commitment of Corporate Social Responsibility by helping youths realize their potentials.
