ACC probes SLBC

By Mustapha Sesay

Deputy Commissioner of the Anti Corruption Commission, Morlai Buyah Kamara
has told a meeting of Civil Society groups and journalists in
Freetown that his commission is at present investigating key
institutions in the country including the Sierra Leone Broadcasting
Corporation (SLBC), the Sierra Leone Ports Authority, Immigration,
Civil Aviation and the University of Sierra Leone.
He says the SLBC is being investigated because of questions surrounding
the procurement of satellite equipment for the corporation. Buyah
Kamara adds that his organisation “continues to enjoy the support
of our partners including DFID” which he says has been rumoured to
have cut funding to the Commission.
The ACC deputy head says government provides 75% of their funding. He
says they are currently engaged in decentralising their operations
all over the country with offices in all provincial headquarter towns
with plans to open one in Kono because of its distance to the eastern
headquarters of Kenema.
Buyah-Kamara explained to the meeting that the commission had seventeen active
cases in court including four appeals. Regarding the just concluded
case against the former Freetown city Mayor, he said “we wanted
conviction on all the counts” but that the commission was pleased
with the outcome.
