Aware of the tribal and regional dichotomy that has permeated the politics of Sierra Leone as epitomised by the only two political parties (SLPP and APC) that have ruled our country since independence fifty years ago, Politico aims to help detribalise and de-regionalise our politics for the amelioration of the plight of the ordinary Sierra Leonean no matter where they are or who they may have voted for.
We believe that no one is responsible for their being born into a certain ethnic group and must therefore not suffer as a consequence. This is the only way we can truly rise from the ashes of war and the backward political system that has been caused and sustained and is characterised by the deep-seated rumble of corruption our country has so long suffered from, and political violence emanating from the desperation exhibited by the political class and their cronies and tribes-people.
Published by FreeMedia Group, Politico is not just any other newspaper, even if that sounds a bit of a cliché. We are here to fill a vacuum that the country's vibrant print media has so often left out, probably inadvertently.
We are a weekly – and plan to go twice weekly at the most – but will NOT daily. We believe in detailed analyses of issues and events, publishing the facts, truth (where we can establish it), honesty, objectivity and impartiality. The country and the masses are at the heart of our reason d’etre – not the protection of any politicians or corporate interest.
We are here to tell truth to power whoever they are and no matter the consequence on us. When the people put their destiny in the hands of their leaders, these leaders must let the people – not their inner circle and family and associates in the corporate world – be at the heart of whatever policies they initiate. We will expose corruption without being vindictive. We will collaborate with the Anti Corruption Commission in the fight against official graft by holding even the ACC to account.
We are a deliberately-chosen group of media professionals and like-minded Sierra Leoneans who have a record spanning over 75 years of journalism and the teaching of journalism. We will make mistakes but we will not err in this trade. That vast experience of practice and training is what we plan to bring to you.
