Police debunk tribalism charges

By Mohamed Vandi in Kenema

The Community Relations Officer of the Kenema Police Division on Wednesday disclosed to Politico that the Sierra Leone Police is a national force that did not countenance tribalism in its operations as alleged by the District Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Arthur Koroma.

Sergeant Patrick Kamara said Sierra Leone had no northern police but a constabulary for the protection of life and property and therefore could not tell which of those police officers were alleged to be northerners.

He assured the public of their commitment to ensure peaceful elections in November.

The SLPP Kenema District Chairman had accused the SLP of placing people from one region of the country at the helm of the district police and named the Assistant Inspector General of Police in the region, the Local Unit Commander, the Officers in charge of the CID and paramilitary OSD.

However, junior police officer, who pleaded for anonymity, confirmed to this press that indeed the named officers were all northerners allegedly planted in the division because of the coming election.
