The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday announced that it was investigating allegation of misuse of donor funds at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation totaling US $ 1, 099,640.
The said funds were provided by the GAVI ALLIANCE, an International NGO supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the Ministry of Health for improved access and resolving major constraints to immunization delivery.
In press release, the anti-graft agency said: “The seeming embarrassment to the country, has resulted in the freezing of the current GAVI grant worth over USD$500,000, and a new two-year grant of USD$ 5,399,371.”
The commission added that those allegations included undocumented expenses, cash disbursements from bank accounts without documentation and overcharged procurement costs relating to the purchase of ambulances.
“In keeping with its mandate, the Commission has initiated an investigation into the matter and will soon bring to book anyone that may be found culpable under the law,” it promised.
