Old Edwardians FC registered another win against Kissy All Stars on Saturday 11 February to earn them 7 points from 5 matches and take them to 8th place in the Premier League table. A day earlier Diamond Stars of Kono had walloped Central Parade 4-1 away in Freetown catapulting them to the top of the table with 12 points from six matches. Ports Authority meanwhile secured their first point in four matches after a goalless draw away to Kamboi Eagles in Kenema.
Premier league débutante Hassan Koroma snatched the vital win for the Edwardians with his crucial first goal for the club since his arrival on loan from FC Kallon where he had never played in the league. The goal sent the National Stadium agog in the 45th minute when he broke the deadlock from the left to dispatch a right foot shot into the bottom corner of the net easing the pressure on Coach Amidu Karim.
Kissy All Stars FC made Edwards to work hard for their victory as goalkeeper Desmond Caulker produced a string of superb saves to frustrate them in the early stages to keep the game on a knife-edge.
After the match Koroma said it was a dream start for him scoring on his first league match which turned out to be the winner. “I told myself; ‘this is my time, it’s a chance I must take to impress the Coach to keep me'” he said.
Kissy All Stars' coach meanwhile lamented thus: “We cannot feel bad about losing cause this is football”. Coach Raymond Lewis absolved the players of any blame saying, “I can’t blame my players who gave everything. We were unlucky as we had so many chances, and the only mistake we made in our defense line, they [Old Edwardians] capitalized on it”.
The league continues on Sunday 12 February with second and third place teams FC Johansen Kallon battling it out at the National Stadium. A win for either side will see them overtake Diamond Stars at the top spot.
